DIGITALEUROPE's reaction to the US export controls on chips for AI

We are concerned about the measures adopted by the US on 13 January 2025, restricting access to advanced AI chip exports for certain EU Member States and their companies.

These measures do not only treat unequally EU Member States and NATO allies, but they also risk creating tensions in the transatlantic partnership that has long been a pillar of our shared security.

Instead of introducing new restrictive measures, we believe the focus should be on fostering collaboration on mutual priorities. Both the EU and the US depend on one another for competitiveness and security, and this interdependence should be seen as a strength. The EU- as a whole- must remain a trusted economic ally and should never be treated like a security risk.

That’s why we call for an EU-US Critical Tech and Dual Use Council. This forum would enable open dialogue and cooperation on critical technology and security issues, strengthening our partnership as allies and like-minded nations. As DIGITALEUROPE, we stand ready to support the transatlantic partnership, as we have done over the last few years.
