DIGITALEUROPE’s reaction to the Clean Industrial Deal

Today, the European Commission presented the Clean Industrial Deal, a significant step toward strengthening Europe’s industrial competitiveness while accelerating the green transition. We welcome the recognition of digitalisation as a key enabler in making energy more affordable, improving efficiency, and modernising infrastructure—critical elements for securing Europe’s industrial future.

With high energy costs and increasing global competition, European industries need urgent support. Demand-side flexibility—the ability to adjust electricity use based on supply and demand—is one of the most effective ways to improve energy affordability. For example, smart appliances, battery storage, and EV charging can be scheduled to consume power when it’s cheapest and most efficient, helping balance the grid and lower costs for businesses and consumers alike.

Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl, Director-General of DIGITALEUROPE, welcomed the Commission’s approach but called for further action:

“We’re pleased to see the European Commission recognise digitalisation as a key driver of Europe’s clean industrial future. Cutting-edge technologies like smart grids, AI-powered energy management, and digital twins can dramatically improve energy efficiency and reduce costs for businesses. But to fully unlock these benefits, digitalisation must be placed even more firmly at the heart of Europe’s clean industrial strategy. The EU must set clear targets for digital adoption across energy-intensive sectors.

We also welcome the Commission’s decision to reallocate €50 billion under InvestEU to support innovative companies and accelerate digitalisation. However, while this is a step in the right direction, much more investment is urgently needed for Europe to lead in the global tech race.”

The Clean Industrial Deal has the potential to make decarbonisation a true driver of growth, but it must go hand in hand with a strong digital push. Europe’s industrial future depends on bold action to scale up digital solutions that enhance sustainability, competitiveness, and energy resilience.

DIGITALEUROPE stands ready to support this process with insights from Europe’s digital sector, ensuring the Clean Industrial Deal delivers real impact for businesses and society.
