Data Governance Act: a big step towards building European data spaces

DIGITALEUROPE welcomes the ambitions of the Data Governance Act proposal to drive the development of Common European Data Spaces and the wider data sharing ecosystem.

Director-General of DIGITALEUROPE Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl said:

“The Data Governance Act is a great opportunity to kickstart the European data spaces and boost data sharing at EU level. Increasing access to and re-use of public data will be crucial to encourage innovation and growth. This especially the case for smaller businesses, only 12% of whom are currently using big data.

In order to advance the EU data economy and develop a European data sharing ecosystem that fosters innovation and growth, the Data Governance Act should ease access to the untapped potential of data from public and private actors alike. This is best achieved through an open approach, helping all businesses to freely and safely share and access data.”

Companies operating in the EU securely move data across borders as part of their activities, in compliance with existing legislation (notably the GDPR). This new legislative framework should support their operations by increasing trust in data sharing while facilitating the free flow of data.

DIGITALEUROPE looks forward to discussing the Data Governance Act with the EU co-legislators.
