• EPC's policy workshop: An Industry Action Plan for the European Union

    10 September 2018On 6 September the EPC held a workshop to develop input for its ‘An Industry Action Plan for the European Union’’ Task Force. Ray Pinto, DIGITALEUROPE's Director for Policy, recalled the opportunity for the EU to be a global leader in ‘Digitising European Industries’.

    On 6 September the European Policy Centre (EPC) held a workshop to develop input for its "An Industry Action Plan for the European Union" Task Force.

    Ray Pinto, Director for Policy, was invited to provide comments alongside representatives from DG GROW, the Austrian Presidency and the Green Party of the European Parliament. Other speakers included EFPIA and the European Climate Foundation.

    The key conclusions from all participants is the more energy and prioritisation is needed now to lay the groundwork for the next European Commission Mandate to include an industrial strategy.

    The Austrian Presidency will focus on AI/robotics, skills/qualifications, Monitoring/governance/mainstreaming. The European Commission highlighted its focus on funding and coordination with DG CONNECT and RTD.

    Ray outlined the opportunity for the EU to be a global leader in ‘Digitising European Industries’. He emphasised DIGITALEUROPE’s contribution to developing skills with its working group and role in as the secretariat of the Jobs and Skills Coalition and the high-level group on key enabling technologies expanding the need for investments and policy support to a wider definition of Digital.

    He also urged more caution in policy development in particular the area of regulating algorithms as the technology is in its inception phase.
